Medical Coding and Billing Training

What Is Medical Coding and Billing?

In essence, Medical Coding is transforming healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. It is the process of categorizing health records into universally accepted codes.

Introduced by Jacques Bertillon, the first medical coding system was introduced in the 19th century to track mortality easily. WHO took over the system and modified it to include statistics of the death and injuries. This system is called the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries, and Causes of Death (ICD).

Medical billing is the second step in a long process, the first being medical coding. It involves healthcare providers submitting claims to insurance companies and collecting payments for their services. The medical report, coded by medical coders, includes the diagnosis and treatment the patient underwent.
